Secrets to Using the Library

Not sure how to use Kimbel Library's new search box? Students, have your professors asked you to find peer-reviewed articles and you aren't sure what that means? Faculty, do you want to know how to link directly to library content in Blackboard or Moodle?

The library has added a new tutorials page to our website where you can watch short videos on using the library. Student tutorials include instructions for searching Discover! and CQ Researcher, as well as using Wikipedia or choosing keywords. Faculty tutorials explain how to add the library’s subscription articles and videos to Blackboard and Moodle.

We’ll be adding more tutorials later in the semester, so check back soon for more tutorials on borrowing articles and other items through Interlibrary Loan and borrowing books from other South Carolina academic libraries using PASCAL.

Kimbel Library Throwback: Do You Remember?

If you've visted Bryan Information Commons lately, you may have noticed our new display, "Do You Remember?" featuring such "antiques" as a pencil sharpener, cassette player, and a land-line telephone.

All jesting aside, we have been cleaning out our closets and have run across some interesting items. That white box with a rolly wheel in the middle was actually an envelope moistener/sealer. The box behind that contains a Dymo Embossing Wheel -- an old-school label maker.

Apart from these curiosities we've also found several Kimbel Library newsletters and handbooks from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. This Kimbel Library handbook from yesteryear includes rules outlawing food and drink, discouraging conversation, and which sections of the library a person could smoke in.

Good news since the 70's: smoking is no longer allowed in the library, food and drink are (mostly) allowed (just not near the fancy technology), and talking amongst yourselves is completely acceptable on the first floor of Kimbel Library and the first and second floors of Bryan Information Commons.

If you get the chance, check out this (and other) displays near the entrance of Bryan Information Commons.

Enhancements to Library's Mobile Site

The library has added two new enhancements to our mobile website.

First, our new library search engine, Discover!, is now searchable from our mobile website. Discover! searches the library's journals, books, newspapers, and more through a single, Google-like search box.

Second, you can also access our new computer availability maps from the mobile website. These maps allow you to see what computers are currently free to use on each floor of Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons.

You can access the library's mobile site from the library's homepage www.coastal.edu/library or download the library's app, which you will be prompted to do when you visit the library's homepage from your mobile device.

Computer Availability Maps Now Available

As mid-terms draw closer, we know the library and information commons can get very busy. If you aren't sure where to look for a free work space, check out our computer availability maps!

The maps are available for all public computers in Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons (both floors). You can find the maps online here, or check the monitor above the Bolton Help Desk in the Bryan Information Commons.

New Book Request Option for Faculty

Most of Kimbel Library's materials ordering is done through our primary book vendor, Yankee Book Peddler, in an online ordering system called GOBI. Coastal Carolina faculty members can now be set up as selectors with Yankee Book Peddler. This will allow faculty to select materials and add them to the library's book cart for approval. Items that can be selected include:
  • - Books
  • - eBooks
  • - Scores
  • - Play Scripts
  • - Museum Publications
  • - and much, much more!

Interested faculty can contact Cathy Goodwin, Head of Collection Management, for login information and directions for selecting book titles.
