New and Improved SCIENCEDIRECT

The library now has access to almost 600 additional journals through ScienceDirect, thanks to a consortial agreement between Elsevier and a group of South Carolina academic libraries. Added content includes new journals in nursing, sports management and medicine, public health, psychology, business, chemistry, and environmental studies.

ScienceDirect is one of the library’s most popular databases with consistently high use. Don’t be misled by the name – in addition to strong science content, ScienceDirect has great coverage of education, business, psychology, and archaeology.

The Library is pleased to introduce several new books donated by the Nippon Foundation's Read Japan program. Thanks to the foundation’s generosity, we now have additional titles in the collection that will strongly benefit the new Asian Studies minor. These books on Japan will perfectly support existing courses in contemporary East Asian politics; East Asian history; Asian religions; pre-modern, modern, and post-World War II Japan; the Japanese language; and Asian drama, contemporary fiction, and cinema.

Tunnel of Oppression

The 2^nd annual Tunnel of Oppression is being held at CCU this upcoming Wednesday, November 9^th and Thursday, November 10^th, from 5-9 p.m. at the University Place Phase III Activity House. Tunnel of Oppression, which originally began at Western Illinois University, will serve to raise awareness of various forms of oppression, and provide insight on how others can help improve the well-being of our global community. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the Women’s Resource Center, the Tunnel of Oppression will feature interactive media presentations such as videos, skits, readings and images. The Tunnel of Oppression is free and open to all!

TEAL Center Now Offers Online Courses for Faculty and Staff

The new online format provides a great deal of flexibility for the busy schedules that faculty and staff members of the university maintain. Coastal Carolina University becomes a "Quality Matters" institution!

Coastal Carolina University recently became a Quality Matters institution. “Quality Matters (QM) is a faculty-centered, peer review process that is designed to certify the quality of online and blended courses” (http://www.qmprogram.org/).

In the fall of 2003, MarylandOnline, Inc. began a three-year grant funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) entitled "Quality Matters: Inter-Institutional Quality Assurance in Online Education." QM has become a non-profit organization that provides tools and training to ensure quality in online education. QM provides a set of standards (The QM Rubric) to help guide the design of online courses and provides a peer review process between faculty to gauge online and blended courses based upon these standards.

The development of the QM standards was based upon an extensive literature review. In order to spread the word about QM, the TEAL Center in Kimbel Library will be hosting a series of face-to-face and Adobe Connect trainings as well as online orientations to the program. The Teal World in Kimbel Library

It’s Homecoming Week at CCU and Kimbel Library jumped at the chance to participate in the fun by entering the office decorating contest. Library staff decorated the library’s foyer area in accordance with this year’s Homecoming theme, “The Teal World: Coastal”.

The display is a teal colored dorm room made with extra library furniture, cardboard and paper. All of the materials used in the display are recycled or recyclable. The bed, TV, entertainment stand, and end tables are completely made out of cardboard and the rug is paper woven together. The knobs on the drawers are made from the caps of recycled water bottles. The handle on the entertainment stand is the handle from the bucket that is the top of the lamp.

If you look closely, you’ll see film gems such as “The Chauncy of Oz” and “The Good, The Bad and the Chauncy” as well as CCU t-shirts and other items.

Please stop by and take a look at Kimbel Library’s display and be sure to greet the two cardboard teal students who have made the teal dorm room their new home.

New Database

New Database! EBSCO’s Art and Architecture Complete

Art major or no, you’ve probably heard of Vincent Van Gogh, the prolific, eccentric painter of such masterpieces as Sun Flowers and Starry Night. Two researchers and authors from Aiken, SC, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, have just turned prevailing knowledge about Van Gogh’s life and death on its ear with the publication of Van Gogh: the Life. The two have already earned a Pulitzer Prize for their biography Jackson Pollock: an American Saga. In their current book, they assert that Van Gogh was a solitary soul and a voracious reader, that he suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy and that he may well have been murdered.

If you’re interested in learning more about Van Gogh or Pollock or, for that matter, about Naifeh and Smith, turn to our newest art database, Art and Architecture Complete, to begin your research. AAC indexes 780 journals, of which 380 are full text and 64% are peer-reviewed. It also includes some monographs and a picture image gallery, but lacks podcasts and dissertation indexing. Research on the aforementioned Van Gogh and Pollock may be pursued in 28 art history journals, 25 of which are peer reviewed and full-text up to and including the current issue.

Halloween Titles

It’s that time of year when, to paraphrase Shakespeare, ghouls and goblins and other things wicked this way come. In celebration of Halloween, check out Rotten Tomatoes’ Top Twenty-five Horror Films (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/features/special/2010/top_horror/). You’ll find DVDs in Kimbel Library’s collection that made the 2007 and 2010 lists now on display in the reading area on the first floor.

Two silent masterpieces set the standard for the horror films that followed. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, #5, was based on a real murder and the fangs and nails of the vampire in Nosferatu, #4, are grossness personified. Three iconic horror figures--Dracula, #27, Frankenstein, #7, and his Bride… #2-- made their screen debuts during the Great Depression , while 1956’s sci-fi/horror combo, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, #8, was an allegory on the political blacklisting of that decade. The trailer for Alien, another sci-fi/horror combo, promised that, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” Alien comes in at #9. Two foreign language films made 2007’s list: the Spanish language film, Cronos, at #42; the Korean, A Tale of Two Sisters, at #46. Animals large (Jaws, #12) and small (Birds, #24) strike terror in peoples’ hearts when seen through the lens’ of directors like Spielberg and Hitchcock. So, if you want your terror tempered by comedy, choose instead the laughs and screams aplenty in 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, #42. Are you into the current zombie craze? You’ll be glad that 1978’s Dawn of the Dead made the list at number twenty-one. We’ve got the 2004 remake, featuring CCU grad Michael Kelly in a supporting role. Good and evil vie for dominance in 1955’s Night of the Hunter, #15, as a psychotic preacher plays a cat-and-mouse game with two children. Equally terrifying to children of all ages is the circus depicted in the now legendary film ranked #20, Freaks. If you’re looking for horror that’s pleasing on the eye, two stylish depictions are M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense, #29, and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, #14. Want to watch the top horror movie of all time? Ask for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho on reserve at the Circulation Desk and learn why protagonist Norman Bates believes a boy’s best friend is his mother.

Carrie, #46, Halloween, #34, and Rosemary’s Baby, #14, are, as of this writing, already checked out. Grab one of the few remaining fiendish flics fast!

The library is now offering a brand new database finder!

On Friday, Sept. 16th, Kimbel Library went live with a new look and feel for interior pages in its web site. These pages will display information in a cleaner format, placing smaller chunks of information on each page, while making the most popular pages easier to find.

One of the features of this new content is a new database finder platform, which offers more features for searching and browsing for online databases. These databases offer significant amounts of full-text magazine and journal articles. Take a look at the new Database Finder !

Part 2 of the Digital Archive "Slavery and Anti-Slavery" now available

In 2010, the library acquired Part 1 of the digital archive Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Transnational Archive. Charles Joyner and Vernon Burton are editors of the series; Dr. Joyner spoke about the value of this archive when it was presented to the campus community at the library last October. The Archive is a four-part series, with each part scheduled for annual release. Part 1 was released last summer.

We now have access to Part 2: Slave Trade in the Atlantic World

Part 2 covers involvement of countries on both sides of the Atlantic in the slave trade, with primary documents from 1702. The collection focuses primarily on the roles of the US, UK and France, but includes documents from Haiti, Jamaica, Denmark, Portugal, Brazil, and Senegal as well. Key content includes missionary records, European business records, Royal African Company records, Supreme Court records and newly digitized university collections.

Researchers can limit their search to specific types of content, like correspondence, images, court testimony, maps, personal accounts, sermons, editorials and newspaper articles, as well as by language, publication date and geographic subject. Documents are included in the library’s catalog; Part 1 has over 6000 documents and records for Part 2 will be loaded soon.

Safety First!

Since the library is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week and always has a constant influx of students, the Access Services staff took time this summer to participate in emergency and safety training. The department has taken the initiative to be prepared if and when there is an emergency or safety issue in our facility. All eleven Circulation Supervisors have completed the National Safety Council’s First Aid Course, Standard First Aid and CPR/AED Course.

It was a fun and interactive morning as everyone learned procedures such as correct bandaging techniques, wound care, proper use of a defibrillator, basic life support and how to handle an allergic reaction or diabetic episode.

The four-hour course was presented by Greg Weisner and Holly Massey from the Coastal Carolina Department of Environmental Health and Safety. It was well-presented, very informative and contained information that could be the deciding factor between life and death.

The library also had new Automated External Defibrillators installed in July, which Access Services now has the knowledge and skills to effectively use if a situation ever arises.

Even if it’s as simple as needing a band-aid, Access Services is here to help. We have a First Aid Kit that can assist with even the smallest of injuries. Do not hesitate to ask for our help. We do not however give out lollipops after we fix you up!

Welcome Back and Construction Update

Kimbel Library and the TEAL Center would like to wish a warm welcome to all new and returning students and faculty. As you may have noticed, the Bryan Information Commons is beginning to take shape. Since classes let out in May, the builders have laid the foundation, and made great progress toward building the framework for what will be a 18,000 square foot, state-of-the-art center for student learning and engagement. Of course, with any kind of progress, comes a little extra noise. If you happen to be working in that library during the day, and are bothered by the noise, we have disposable earplugs available near the main entrance. Kimbel Library is proud to announce that My ILLiad has arrived! Requesting interlibrary loan materials has never been easier. All Coastal students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to register your My ILLiad account as soon as possible and explore the ease of borrowing books, journal articles, and much more.

Registration is easy. First, go to the library's interlibrary loan page. From there you can enter your username and password which is the same as your Coastal email login information. After that, all you have to do is fill in your personal information, click save, and you are all set! Requesting articles is a breeze; when you find an article that we do not have full text access to, simply click "request this article through interlibrary loan" and My ILLiad will auto-fill the citation information for you.

EBSCOhost Databases: Browser Compatibility Issues

EBSCOhost databases seem to be having some issues with the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. If you attempt to search an EBSCOhost database with one of these browsers you may encounter errors that will prevent you from browsing search results, viewing related images, or linking out to full-text holdings.

EBSCOhost has been made aware of the problem and they are actively working to correct it. In the meantime, Kimbel Library recommends using either Internet Explorer or Opera for browsing and conducting research in EBSCOhost databases.

NEW! E-Books from Duke University Press

Kimbel Library is the new owner of the 2011 Duke UP ebook collection. This collection of 100+ books in the humanities and social sciences is available now as ebooks, and will eventually be available in print.

Purchase of the current year collection gives us access to back list ebooks from Duke, so we now have an additional 1242 books in the catalog. This purchase balances our existing ebook offerings, which is strong in science, technology and medicine. Some of the subjects covered in the Duke collection are:

American History (pre-revolution)
South American history
American Literature
Film
Marriage, Family and Women’s Studies
Labor issues and the working class
History of East Asia

Duke UP ebooks reside on the ebrary platform, and include all of ebrary’s great features, like highlighting, note-taking, text-to-speech capability, multiple simultaneous users, and copy/ paste with automatic citation.

Library Construction Update

Summer weather has arrived in South Carolina, and those working outside on our new library addition are feeling the heat. However, humidity and the scorching sun are no match for this hard-working crew. Since beginning in late April, they've made great strides in the building of the new Bryan Family Information Commons. the sidewalk in front of th library has been removed and replaced by massive holes meant to house pilings that will act as the foundation for the building. The construction crew has also partially removed the facade of the west side of the library in order to connect the new addition to the existing building.

All of this progress, however, does not come without some disruption. Jackhammers and bulldozers never rose to popularity because of their tranquil, soothing sounds. Never fear, Kimbel Library is here. If you are troubled by the noise while working in the library, please feel free to take advantage of the free earplugs located near the main entrance of the library. Simply turn the orange knob at the bottom of the dispenser until it has produced the desired number of plugs. These earplugs are disposable, so feel free to throw them away when leaving the library. Stay tuned for more updates as we make more progress on our new Bryan Family Information Commons.

New Book Drop at Kimbel Library

Construction on the new library addition has begun, and our main entrance has been closed. To enter the library, guests must enter through a new entrance on the southwest side of the building near the entrance to Java City. As a result of this new entrance, the location of our book drop has changed. If you would like to return library materials after hours, you can place them in our new book drop located just beyond our new southwest entrance. Finally, Kimbel Library has begun our summer schedule:

National Library Week is a time to remind others about the contribution libraries, librarians and library workers make to their communities every day. This year's festivities will consist of four main events as well as week-long :

12 to 1:00 p.m. Edible Book Fair (Win an iPod Shuffle)
All Coastal Carolina University faculty, staff, and students are welcome to submit their own creations. Submissions will be displayed in the library from 12:00-1:00 p.m. while students vote for their favorite edible book. Cake will be served for all to enjoy! Looking for some ideas? Kimbel Library is teaming up with Tea and Ethics to spark a lively discussion about your online privacy. Popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter allow everyone to communicate with great ease and freedom. However, with that freedom comes the responsibility to protect personal information, reputations, and digital footprints. A "digital footprint" specifically describes the trail one leaves online. Social networking makes creating this footprint simple, but removing it can be extremely difficult. Views expressed or photos posted online today may haunt individuals as they move forward with their lives and pursue new careers, new relationships, or new opinions. Join library and philosophy faculty as they discuss the difficulties of living privately in the information age.

The library will hold a Starcraft II (the science fiction online strategy game) tournament. Those interested in participating in the tournament are encouraged to bring their own laptops. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place gamers. In addition to the tournament, four large screens will be used for Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. There will also be board games, card games and puzzles. Participants are encouraged to bring their own games to play, or use games provided by the library. Free snacks will also be provided.

National Library Week Trivia (Win Free Stuff)One trivia questions will appear on the library's blog each day during the week. To win a $15 gift certificate to Java City, submit a comment with the answer to the question.. With your response, include your name and email address (Don't worry, your response is private and will not appear on the blog). Students, faculty, and staff who answer correctly before 5:00 p.m. each day will be entered in prize drawing. One lucky winner will be selected daily and notified of their prize by the library office.

Do you have library fines? Do you wish you didn't have to pay them? Would you like to help out others? If so, donate food for the hungry and have library fines forgiven. Here are the rules:

Donated items may not be past the expiration date, dented, or in poor condition
Items must be more than a single serving

Tell us Your Story:

We set up a do-it-yourself video station on the first floor of the library near the main entrance. This is an electronic platform for students to express themselves, so think of it as your blank canvas. We want to hear a little about you and your thoughts about Kimbel Library, or just whatever comes to mind.. Of course, we ask you to keep it PG. Directions for using the video station will be posted next to the computer. Have fun!

A Look Inside Kimbel Library's New iPads

Did you know we have iPads for check-out in the Kimbel Library Equipment Room? We do! All iPads come loaded with varying apps. One popular app creates a three-dimensional image of the human brain, while another provides information on all of the Senators and Congressmen in the current U.S. Congress. The iPads also provide a quick and easy way to access Kimbel Library’s extensive e-book collection. By clicking on the Kimbel E-books button located on the iPad home screen, you are able to search through our 85,000 available e-books. Once located, you can read the e-book right on the iPad inside of the Safari browser. If you need to take notes, you can jump on over to the notes app located on the homescreen. Once you are finished, you can email the notes to yourself or your classmates. Your can check out our iPads from the equipment room on the second floor of the library for use in the library only. Don't forget to bring your CINO card.

National Film Registry of the Library of Congress

Awards season is over.Gaga grabbed four Grammys. The Social Network garnered the grandest Globes. And during the Academy Awards, the season’s grand finale, the British cast of The King’s Speech bested the geeky stateside front- runners to take home the 2010 Academy Award for Best Picture—as well as three more. While these awards shows aired during primetime and their nominees grabbed headlines for weeks, the recipients of another equally prestigious award were announced on December 28th to little fanfare.

In Washington D. C., the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, announced that 25 films were added during 2010 to the National Film Registry. The honor is bestowed on American films at least 10 years old and aesthetically, culturally or historically significant to the United States. They range from major productions by Hollywood studios to independent films, from documentaries and newsreels to animation and advertisements. This year’s roster represents over 100 years of filmmaking: from Thomas Edison’s 1891 Newark Athlete, to 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, to 1996’s Study of a River. Winners were selected from over 2100 nominees submitted by the National Film Preservation Board and the general public.

The Registry was established by the National Film Preservation Act of 1988. The Act is renewed periodically by Congress in increments of four to seven years. The Librarian of Congress and the Film Preservation Board select up to 25 films each year. Prints of all Registry films are kept in cold-storage vaults at the Packard campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center near Culpeper, Virginia.

There are now 550 films in the Registry and Kimbel Library owns 227 of them. A keyword catalog search for “National Film Registry” will bring up a list of titles. Check out the display on the shelving unit adjacent to the leisure reading area on the library’s first floor. Then, check out one of the National Film Registry titles displayed there, including the following:

All the President’s Men. During the Nixon administration in the 1970’s, two reporters uncover White House involvement in the Watergate break-in.
Blade Runner. The film takes place in 2019 in Los Angeles. Replicants, genetically engineered human beings of superior strength and intelligence who provide labor for the planet colonies, revolt. Rick Deckard is a blade runner, a police officer who hunts down and terminates them.
Easy Rider. Two motorcyclists ride in search of the "real" America.
Edison: The Invention of the Movies. Four discs hold tens of commercial motion pictures filmed at the Edison Laboratory between 1888 and 1893.
Freaks. A group of freaks take revenge on a trapeze artist and her boyfriend after years of abuse.
Hoop Dreams. Follows the lives of two inner-city kids with aspirations to play professional basketball.
Image of an Assassination. Abraham Zapruder’s film of President Kennedy’s assassination, as well as an interview with the filmmaker.
The Muppet Movie. Kermit and Fozzie travel to Hollywood to hit it big as stars.
Sex, Lies and Videotape. A long lost college friend drifts back into the lives of a self-involved philanderer, his angelic wife, and her saucy sister.
Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music. Features the entire performances of such music greats as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Crosby, Stills & Nash at the 1969 festival.

It is a small, underappreciated tab on the library website. It says “PASCAL” but most don’t know what it does. This little tab, however, allows you to get almost any book for free. Kinda.

The PASCAL tab is an all-access pass to millions of books!

PASCAL stands for the “Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries.” The PASCAL Delivers service turns all academic libraries in South Carolina into your personal library. Does Kimbel Library not have the book you’re looking for? No problem! Just click on that tab labeled PASCAL on the library homepage and type in your search terms to see if another library has it. It they do, simply click on the “Request this item” link on the book’s information page to order it. Follow the directions to submit your request.

So, why can you only “kinda” get almost any book?

You don’t get it instantly. It takes several days from the time you order to receive the book. Once we receive it, however, we will email you (check your CCU email account). Come by Kimbel Library and pick it up any time after.
You have to give it back eventually. It is like checking out any other book; it has a due date. Sorry, no finders, keepers.

Dr. Barbara Burd, Dean of Library Services, will be arrested on Wednesday, February 16th. No, this is not the result of horrifically high overdue fines. Instead, she is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

After being carted away on the 16th by the MDA, Dr. Burd must pay $2,200 in bail in order to be freed. Since we would like to have her back sooner rather than later, Kimbel Library is asking for your support. You can help Dr. Burd and the Muscular Dystrophy association combat neuromuscular disease by

making a donation.

MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

Make Group Work Easier with New Technology

Kimbel Library recently purchased three media:scape group work stations. Through the integration of furniture and technology, media:scapes provide a space where students can access and share information equally, quickly and seamlessly. Up to six students can share information with their group by connecting their individual laptops to two flat panel LG monitors mounted above the work table. This is made possible by plugging your laptop into the Personal User Control Keys (PUCK). Once connected, the PUCK enables users to seamlessly switch the information displayed on a laptop the monitors. Use them for group papers, presentations, or anything that warrants collaboration among classmates. The media:scapes are located on the first floor of the library behind the journal/magazine reading area. If you have any questions about the new equipment, please do not hesitate to speak with someone at the information or circulation desks.

Kimbel Library would like to thank Miller Motte Technical College for participating in this year's Kimbel Library De-Stress Fest. On the Monday of finals week, six massage therapy students from Miller Motte gave 15 minute massages to some very stressed out students. Massages were given in our dimmed instruction room complete with candles and aroma therapy. In addition to the massages, Kimbel Library provided students with free snacks,puzzles, and the materials to make their very own squeeze balls for stress relief. Check out our pictures.

National Gaming Day on November 13th!

Kimbel Library at Coastal Carolina University will celebrate National Gaming Day from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13. The event is open to University students, faculty and staff.

The library will hold a gaming tournament on Starcraft II, the science fiction online strategy game. Those interested in participating in the tournament are encouraged to bring their own laptops, and prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place gamers.
In addition to the tournament, four large screens will be used for Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. There will also be board games, card games and puzzles.Participants are encouraged to bring their own games to play, or use games provided by the library. Free food and drinks will also be provided.

This event is intended to celebrate the popularity, educational and social value of video and board games. National Gaming Day was formed by the American Library Association to remind library users that there is more to libraries than just books. The event is an opportunity to learn more about Kimbel Library and to see why it has become a popular gathering place for students.

Flip Cams at the Library!

Did you know that Flip Video Cameras are available at the Kimbel Library for checkout? They are one of the simplest shoot and share video cameras available. Flip Cams are able to record at least 30-60 minutes of action, including nearby sound, depending on the model. Simple edits to videos are possible and still pictures can even be extracted from videos taken with Flip Cams.

A picture is worth a thousand words professors! Be more productive and efficient with a Flip Cam in the classroom. Science labs, foreign language exercises, personal introductions in a distance learning situation and documenting experiences are just a few classroom uses of a Flip Cam.

Bryan Information Commons Groundbreaking

On October 12th, CCU celebrated the groundbreaking of the Bryan Information Commons at Kimbel Library. Construction of the building is expected to begin in December and should be completed by Fall 2011.

The building will be focused on student study and reference needs. Last semester, CCU students communicated their study needs to Kimbel Library staff. Those opinions played a large role in designing each aspect of the Bryan Information Commons, from the style of chairs to colors for the walls and the overall layout of the 18,000 square foot addition.

Does the Library Have Textbooks?

Clever students will always pursue the answer to this question at some point during their attendance at Coastal Carolina University. Here is the answer: Yes and no.

Kimbel Library holds textbooks under certain conditions:
Some CCU Faculty members will choose to place the textbook for their course(s) on reserve at the library for their students to use. These textbooks are held in the "Course Reserve" area behind the KL Circulation Desk on the first floor. Course Reserves can be checked out for 3 hours at a time and can only be used in Kimbel Library.

Education majors who are specializing in primary or secondary education can find the textbooks their students will use in the "Media Textbook" area on the second floor.

Now for the "no" answer:
Kimbel Library doesn't have ALL textbooks for each course taken at CCU. The best way to find out if the library has a book that you need is to search our online catalog by the title of the book or search the author’s last name. If you find a book that isn’t on course reserve, it is probably going to be in the Main Stacks on the 2nd floor.

But before you get your hopes up, keep in mind that if we DO have textbooks that courses are using, they are usually difficult to find since the majority of CCU students also had your clever idea.

New Media Research Guides

Are you taking art or English; education or Spanish? If you are, then this blog’s for you. There are some new Research Guides in the library. The typical Guide is something you’re introduced to in library instruction. It fast tracks your research. These Guides are different. No databases or e-books. Instead, they introduce you to the library’s DVDs and young adult novels and children’s books and puppets (yes, puppets!). On the library’s home page, simple clicks of the mouse on the Research Guides’ “Subject” tab and then on the subject “Media Collection” get you to your destination.

So, if you’re taking English 102, the Literature DVDs Guide’s pages highlight the biographies of authors, as well as the novels, plays, poetry and short stories on DVD that are available for checkout. You’ll find everything from Oedipus the King to Hamlet to Death of a Salesman. And that’s just the drama! All DVDs are especially valuable to visual learners.

And speaking of visual learners…. With the Art DVDs Guide you’ll learn about artists , mediums, movements, periods and techniques. You’ll view the art of Dali and Lichtenstein, as well as the crafts of tattooing and quilting. The Guide also includes titles on long term loan from the National Gallery of Art, like The Art of Romare Bearden.

Are you taking Spanish? Do you need some extra credit? A source just might be found in one of the largest collections of Latin American and Spanish cinema in the Southeast. Watch Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in their first movie together, Jamon, Jamon. Discover the films of Luis Bunuel, one of the most celebrated avant-garde directors of the twentieth century. Find these and hundreds of more DVDs and videotapes ready of extra credit viewing listed in the Spanish Language DVDs Guide.

If you’re an educator in the making, not one, not two, but three guides are for you. The Education DVDs Guide offers “hot topics” titles about bullying and literacy stations and corridors of shame, as well as additional pages featuring Movies about Teachers for EDUC 111 students; Diversity for EDUC 215 students, and Movies about People with Disabilities for EDLD 370 students. Slavery & Anti-Slavery Archive Celebration

Banned Books Read-Out!

Catcher in the Rye… Of Mice and Men… Harry Potter. What’s your favorite book? Chances are good that someone has tried to ban it. In support of the right to choose books freely for ourselves, Kimbel Library will celebrate National Banned Books Week with a Banned Books Read-Out. On September 28th students and faculty members will gather in Edwards Recital Hall at 4:30 to read from some of the most commonly banned books in the United States. Attendees will also enjoy performances of banned music as well as a short video on censorship created by Kimbel Library.

Banned Books Week [Sept.25-Oct.2] is an annual celebration of our right to read without censorship. This year's observance commemorates the most basic freedom in a democratic society—the freedom to read freely—and encourages us not to take this freedom for granted.

New Women's Studies Books!

Kimbel Library recently added 48 new titles to our Women's Studies Collection. The collection was established in 2004 with an initial 135 volumes. The books include biographies, autobiographies and nonfiction works by women. It was initiated by educator Florida Yeldell in memory of her father, a rural mail carrier in Georgetown County, South Carolina. The collection now contains 222 books and will continue to grow.

SafeAssign: A Helpful Teaching Technology

The TEAL Center has definitely kicked off the semester with a bang! We have been offering some great NEW sessions, and attendance has been through the roof! Our most popular session by far has been the SafeAssign session, led by COHFA’s very own Ellen Arnold. TEAL teamed with Ellen to provide an informational session for faculty on the ins and outs of the popular product.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism detection/deterrent tool provided as part of our current version of Blackboard (which means it is free of cost for faculty to use!). SafeAssign allows instructors to review reports comparing student writings to online sources and the work of other students.

The session was 90 minutes long, and the house was packed. In the session, Ellen talked with faculty in attendance about the use of the SafeAssign tool, the ethics of it, and possible ways to present the use of the tool to students. Some in attendance agreed that the tool may be used best as a plagiarism deterrent, to teach students about plagiarism and to allow them to “check” their own work before submitting it for a grade. Others in the group thought the tool would work better as a plagiarism detector, to identify blatant and attempted plagiarism. All agreed that it is a good teaching and checking tool. Participants in the workshop were even able to submit their own plagiarized work to see how well it works- and it did!

New Films on Demand

Films on Demand has just released 57 new titles, including films on sustainability in the Congo, Google World and theories on the origins of the Inuit.

Take a look at life in an earlier global warming period in Inuit Odyssey. With scenes shot in icy landscapes of the Artic Circle, the film tracks the Inuit from Siberia to Canada and finally to Greenland. Why did they migrate and how did their culture survive when others did not?

What is Films on Demand? Think Netflix, but with documentaries only, and it's free for Coastal Carolina students and faculty. Watch a segment or an entire film anywhere you can access the library website.

Kimbel Library Welcomes New and Returning Faculty and Students

Kimbel Library has been busy with many efforts to welcome new and returning students and faculty to campus as well as and to welcome back our returning faculty. The TEAL Center has been assisting the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning with new faculty orientation which includes a teaching workshop and administrative orientation on Thursday and Friday, August 12 and 13 for approximately 45 faculty members.

As Kimbel librarians and staff volunteered to help with Move-In day on Saturday, August 14, the TEAL Center hosted a Technology Move-In Day attended by 23 faculty members. New faculty had the opportunity to “move-in” to their Blackboard courses to get them prepared for the start of classes and to learn about FERPA (Federal Education Right to Privacy Act) and the academic calendar from the Registrar’s Office as well as Kimbel Library resources and campus technology resources.

Kimbel Library has been busy over the summer making changes to the building in anticipation the new semester and launching our new website to better assist students, faculty and staff with access to resources.

As part of Welcome Week, Kimbel Library is promoting our theme for the year, Choose Privacy. Faculty and students may have seen the traveling display called “Fix Your Face.” This campaign encourages students and faculty to think about privacy issues as it relates to Facebook and other social media.

Kimbel Library has many new and exciting this things going on this academic year from the beginning of construction of our new information commons, to Banned Books week and fun events during Family Weekend. Welcome back to campus and we wish everyone a successful start to the new year!

Movin' and Shakin'

Major changes at Kimbel Library! This summer the library moved our bound journal collection and our reference collection to the second floor. This allowed us to showcase our CDs and DVDs on the first floor as well as provide more space for group study and general library chillin'. Reference books are now available for checkout, but bound journals remain for library use only.

What's That Noise? White Noise in Kimbel Library

Kimbel Library now has a white noise system on the first floor that should help keep things much quieter for groups working on projects as well as individuals trying to concentrate on their studies. The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology defines white noise as "an auditory stimulus that has all frequencies represented in random fluctuation and sounds like an ongoing ‘shhh’.", which makes it seem particularly library appropriate. As before, group project work and group studying is encouraged on the 1st floor and in the second floor study rooms, and the library's second floor is reserved for silent study only.

Two New Databases Now Available

Check out Kimbel Library's two new databases, Tests in Print and the Slavery Anti-Slavery Collection. Tests in Print is an online version of the print source where you can find "a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language". The Slavery Anti-Slavery collection "includes documents from the United States and Europe, as well as other parts of the world" including newspapers, books, magazines, and other primary sources.

We live in an age when knowledge is power. New technologies give us unprecedented access to information. They also facilitate surveillance, with the power to collect and mine personal information.

People enjoy the convenience of having information at their fingertips. But most people don’t realize the trade off. For example, citizens turn a blind eye to the fact that online searches create traceable records that make them vulnerable to questioning by the FBI, or that government agencies can track their phone calls, airline travel, online purchases, and more.

In this environment, convenience and fear trump the fundamental right of privacy. And privacy has become so amorphous an idea that many citizens have resigned themselves to an inevitable erosion of rights.

In an information age, it’s vital to protect the impulse to be curious, read, and learn. Yet people seem resigned to the loss of their privacy rights because they see no recourse.

Spice Up Final Presentations With Prezi

This presentation software is available at http://prezi.com/, and it may be able to turn those presentation frowns upside down! This software goes beyond the traditional "slide show" format allowing users to place text, images, and video on a blank digital canvas. Once media and text are in place, users can "travel" from one idea to the next zooming in and out as they go. This format allows for more flexibility and creativity with presentations and could be the cure to the "slide show" doldrums. Free accounts are available and a short how-to video is all you need to get started.

Kimbel Library has a trial subscription to the ShipIndex.org online database through the end of April. ShipIndex.org "tells you which books, magazines, and online resources mention the vessels you're researching. With 143,937 entries in the free database and 1,279,773 entries available with premium access, you're bound to find useful information here." Zotero 2.0 Launches Today!

Zotero is a free Firefox browser extension that you can use to organize your research. You can download Zotero here: http://www.zotero.org/. Zotero 2.0 launches today; the new version includes cool features like being able to save your library online and automatic synchronization of your library between different computers you might be using.

KL adds 16,000+ ebooks!

More e-books are now available to all CCU users from Springer, a publisher with a long history of books in medicine, public health, biology and the social sciences, and more recently in the humanities.

ALL are published after 2005, and 2010 titles will be added this year as they are released.

Locate these books through the KL catalog or at the Springerlink site.

The Springer site has some glitches. For one - you can see book titles that we don't have access to. The green box means we have the FT of the book (or journal.) It has been very sssssslllllloooooowwww lately - a call to tech support confirmed that this was a Springer issue and not us.

Where can I find tax forms?

Kimbel Library does have a limited amount of both federal and state tax forms on the first floor outside of the library instruction classroom (room 110).

If we don't have the form you need, forms can be downloaded from http://www.irs.gov (for federal forms) or http://sctax.org/ (for South Carolina forms).

If you need a form for a state other than South Carolina, try googling the name of the state and the phrase "tax forms" in quotes.

If you need help with your taxes, trained CCU student volunteers will offer free help sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The sessions will be held from from Thursday, February 18 through Friday, April 2 (except for March 12-March 19, spring break).

Sessions will be from 3:00-6:00PM in Wall 229 (Except for March 9, 11, and 23rd in Wall 201). For more information on the sessions, contact the CCU VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) coordinator at (843)349-2864.
