Banned Books Read-Out!

On October 4th at 5pm, Kimbel Library and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society, are sponsoring a banned books read-out in Johnson Auditorium (Wall 116). In celebration of Banned Books Week [September 30-October 9], faculty members and students will read passages from some of the most commonly banned books in the United States.

Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of our right to read without censorship. Come out and show your support for freedom of expression and raise awareness of the threats of censorship to intellectual freedom. More can be learned about this national event at the American Library Association’s website. Also, check out a Timeline of significant banned and challenged books to mark the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week!

More New Databases!

The Library is excited to offer several new databases, made available to us through PASCAL.

You may know that PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries) provides rapid delivery of books from other South Carolina college libraries, but did you know that we get a great deal on many of our databases from PASCAL as well?

This summer, we were able to add several new databases that will support the social sciences and many of our new courses and programs. New databases are:
  • Criminal Justice with Full Text   About|Search
  • Film and Television Literature Index with Full Text About|Search
  • Political Science Complete  About|Search
  • Women’s Studies International   About|Search
  • International Security and Counter-Terrorism Reference Center   About|Search
  • Entrepreneurial Study Source   About|Search
In addition, our most-used database, Academic Search Premier, has been upgraded to Academic Search Complete, which includes almost twice the content of ASP, both in the number of full text journals and the number of full-text, peer-reviewed journals.

Business Source Premier has likewise been upgraded to Business Source Complete, which now includes case studies, ebooks, and executive interviews in addition to more business journal content. The addition of Business Insights: Global  this summer supports business students with two outstanding business databases.

Kimbel Library is pleased to offer these new resources. Happy searching!
