Veterans Day Displays

Wednesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War.

Commemorated as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Kimbel Library will be honoring Veterans in the campus community with several displays in the Bryan Information Commons. Displays will include America's White Table, a letter writing table to send thank you notes through the Any Soldier organization and a "Thank You" wall to write the names or post a photo of family or friends who have served in the military. A special thank you to all the men and women who have fought for our country, honor and freedom!

Journal Finder Released

Kimbel Library has released our new Journal Finder service. This EBSCO product offers a more robust and redesigned interface from which to search or browse our e-journal collections.

Highlights of the Journal Finder service include a Search within Publication feature that allows you to search within a journal right from the search results. If there's a specific match on a search query there will be one-click access to the matching journal title at the top of the search results, through the Exact Match Placard service. The user then has the ability to search from this Discover! search results page within this journal or just go to the journal and browse volumes and issues.

Check out Journal Finder today!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month at Kimbel Library. First observed in 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the rich heritage, culture and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. The celebration coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (all September 15), Mexico (September 16), and Chile (September 18).

According to the 2014 Census, more than 50 million people identify as Hispanic or Latino in the U.S., making up 17 percent of the national population. In South Carolina, Hispanics make up 5.3 percent of the population. At Coastal Carolina University, more than 300 Undergraduate and Graduate students identify as Hispanic, making up nearly 3.6 percent of the University’s total enrollment.

Interestingly, South Carolina’s own Spanish history goes all the way back to the 1500s, when colonists led by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón briefly settled the area near present-day Georgetown and Pawleys Island. The Spanish also established Santa Elena on Parris Island, near present-day Beaufort. Initially settled by the French, Santa Elena served as the first capital of Spanish Florida from 1566 to 1587.

Kimbel Library has a wide selection of books and films by Hispanics and Latinos, including Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina), Julio Cortázar (Argentina), Pablo Neruda (Chile), Carlos Fuentes (Mexico), Octavio Paz (Mexico), Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru), Isabel Allende (Chile), Julia Alvarez (Dominican Republic), Sandra Cisneros (Mexico), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Mexico), Guillermo del Toro (Mexico), and others, all available for checkout. Check out the books and films on display at the library this month to celebrate and learn about Hispanic heritage!

Society of Historians), will speak about his book and the historical research that went into writing it. His research challenges the traditional image of the notorious Blackbeard. Come hear why the truth is more interesting than the tale.

The Last Days of Blackbeard the Pirate is brought to you as part of Pirate Week at Kimbel Library. This talk is part of the History Talk series, which is sponsored by the Horry County Archives Center, and takes place at the Lib Jackson Student Union Theatre on Wednesday, Sep. 16 at 7:00 PM. History Talk: Val Dunham

Author Val Dunham, Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the College of Science at Coastal Carolina University, gives this month's History Talk. The talk centers around Allegany to Appomattox: The Life and Letters of Private William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers, a book based on the letters of a Union soldier during the Civil War.

This talk takes place on Tuesday, Mar. 24 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Horry County Archives Center.

From the publisher's book description:
On September 7, 1864, William Whitlock, aged thirty-five, left his wife and four children in Allegany, New York, to join the Union army in battle. More than 100 years later, his unpublished letters to his wife were found in the attic of a family home. These letters serve as the foundation for Allegany to Appomattox, giving readers a vivid glimpse into the environment and political atmosphere that surrounded the Civil War from the perspective of a northern farmer and lumberman.

This event is brought to you by the Horry County Archives Center, as part of the center's History Talk series. The Horry County Archives Center is located on the second floor of Kimbel Library, in Room 220.

Standing on the banks of the Black River, the Mansfield Plantation is a well-preserved living testament to antebellum rice plantations. Boyle captures the spirit of Mansfield Plantation and unravels the many mysteries of its past.

This event is brought to you by the Horry County Archives Center, as part of the center's History Talk series.

Dust Bowl Series Talk

Women's Stories of Survival is the title of this Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry series talk given by Angie Fitzpatrick, Assistant Director of Women's and Gender Studies at CCU.

In the 1930s, record-breaking droughts and dust storms wreaked havoc on the southern plains, destroying farms and displacing families. While the Dust Bowl has captivated American audiences for decades, women's accounts of these historic events have often been overlooked. This lecture explores the experiences of the women who survived the devastation of the Dust Bowl and lived to tell the tale.

The Dust, Drought and Dreams Gone Dry series is a national traveling exhibition about the Dust Bowl, the disastrous drought and dust storms that wreaked havoc on the Great Plains in the 1930s. As part of the exhibition, Kimbel Library hosted programs that connect the Dust Bowl of the Midwest to Horry County.

The talk took place on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. in Edwards Recital Hall. Kimbel Library was selected as one of only 25 libraries in the country to host this exhibit, which was developed by the American Library Association and the libraries of Oklahoma State University and Mount Holyoke College, and was made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor.

New Library Website

Our new website is live! The Kimbel Library website redesign is complete and the new site is now available in the main system. Highlights of the website redesign include a reorganized navigation structure that emphasizes library services and student needs. The design has been modified to align more with university website standards and policies. The Discover! search box is now visible in even the smallest of browsers without scrolling. Thousands of files were deleted from the back-end of the system to increase browsing speed and search engine optimization.

We hope you enjoy the new website!
