Sally Z. Hare Book Talk

Kimbel Library is celebrating National Library Week by sponsoring a book discussion titled On Resilience of the Human Spirit, led by Sally Hare, Singleton Distinguished Professor Emerita at Coastal Carolina University. Professor Hare will be discussing Let the Beauty We Love Be What We Do: Stories of Living Divided No More. The talk is on Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. in Lackey Chapel.

National Library Week

The Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons celebrates National Library Week April 12-18, with a book discussion, Edible Book Fair and Poetry in the Park. National Library Week is a time to highlight the changing role of libraries. Libraries today are more than warehouses for books. Instead, libraries and librarians are change agents within their communities – transforming lives through innovative educational resources and forward-thinking programming.

Kimbel Library is celebrating National Library Week by sponsoring a book discussion led by Sally Hare, Singleton Distinguished Professor Emerita, on The Resilience of the Human Spirit on Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. in Lackey Chapel.

The annual Edible Book Fair will take place on Wednesday, April 15. Edible books can look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a book or author, can be a pun of a book title, can refer to a book character, reproduce a book cover, or just have something to do with books in general.” Some examples from previous entries include grapes with angry faces to symbolize “The Grapes of Wrath” or empty candy wrappers on a plate to symbolize the book “And Then There Were None.” Entries should be dropped of at the circulation desk between 9 and 11 a.m. Voting will be at noon. Prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. First prize in the student category is an Apple TV. Prizes in the faculty/staff and community categories will include a Kimbel Library prize pack. 

Bring a picnic blanket and join us on Friday, April 17 at 3 p.m. as the Kimbel Library and the Department of English sponsor Poetry in the Park, a poetry reading event on the Bryan Information Commons Lawn, to celebrate both National Library Week and National Poetry Month. Sign up to read by contacting Hastings Hensel at whensel@coastal.edu. Limited sign-ups will be available the day of the event.

National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, as founded by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. From the Academy's website:  

National Poetry Month is the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, bloggers, and, of course, poets marking poetry’s important place in our culture and our lives. 

Kimbel Library is holding a Poetry in the Park event on April 17 in celebration of National Library Week and National Poetry Month. Further details to come.

National Library Week is April 12-18!

History Talk: Val Dunham

Author Val Dunham, Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the College of Science at Coastal Carolina University, gives this month's History Talk. The talk centers around Allegany to Appomattox: The Life and Letters of Private William Whitlock of the 188th New York Volunteers, a book based on the letters of a Union soldier during the Civil War. 

This talk takes place on Tuesday, Mar. 24 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Horry County Archives Center.

From the publisher's book description:

On September 7, 1864, William Whitlock, aged thirty-five, left his wife and four children in Allegany, New York, to join the Union army in battle. More than 100 years later, his unpublished letters to his wife were found in the attic of a family home. These letters serve as the foundation for Allegany to Appomattox, giving readers a vivid glimpse into the environment and political atmosphere that surrounded the Civil War from the perspective of a northern farmer and lumberman.
  

This event is brought to you by the Horry County Archives Center, as part of the center's History Talk series. The Horry County Archives Center is located on the second floor of Kimbel Library, in Room 220.
