Recently the library received a suggestion that we add vending machines for drinks and snacks in the library. Because JAVA CITY is in the library building, the library is limited to what kinds of vending machines can be added. We've been working on getting a vending machine for office supplies, but we can't add vending machines for food. However, we will be able to have a vending machine area that will provide food and drinks in the new information commons.
Another suggestion stated, "This is a very noisy library. People all around are having conversations." The writer also states that it's impossible to study here. Library policies recognize that students need to get together to work in groups, so the first floor is not expected to be quiet. However, the second floor is supposed to be an area for quiet study. If you are disturbed by groups or individuals working on the second floor, you can remind them that this is a quiet floor or you can let a member of the library staff know and he/she will ask the group to quiet down.
This year the library has been busier than ever and, while we're so happy that students are using our services and facilities, the overcrowded conditions have made it difficult to designate specific areas for quiet study. During exams, the library will look at designating some specific areas as "no talk" for those wishing to study without distractions.

National Gaming Day!
National Gaming Day is Saturday, November 14 from 12-5 PM at the Kimbel Library! We would like your input on what types of games you would like to play. We will have a Wii, board and card games, and anything else that people would like to bring. Your comments and suggestions are welcome!

Renovate this Library!
The library received two suggestions to renovate the library ASAP. Both stated, "More computers are needed! More resources and better facilities." The comment also mentioned that this is an "old and under-functioning (shameful) library." The good news is that next summer we will be breaking ground for an information commons, which will provide more computers, study areas, and soft seating in a building with lots of natural light.
In the meantime, we've upgraded the study rooms on the second floor. They are now collaborative work spaces, where you can plug in your computer to a large screen monitor so everyone can view and share work. Two of the rooms have computers with wireless keyboards that can be checked out for use by small groups. These rooms also have webcams and large screen monitors.
The budget does not allow for renovation of the current building, but the library staff is working hard to provide some updated technology and equipment to enhance your research experience.

National Information Literacy Awareness Month
In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the National Forum on Information Literacy, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month. The proclamation states:
This month, we dedicate ourselves to increasing information literacy so that all citizens understand its vital importance. An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.

The 1st day of 24/5 is here!
Today is the first day of Kimbel Library's new 24/5 hours!
The library will open at 1:00 pm today and won't close again until 5:00 pm on Friday! After midnight, you will need a CCU ID to be in the building, so don't forget to bring yours with you! You're welcome to wear pajamas if you like!
